Communications Director, Global Health Advocacy Incubator
Job Based in Washington, D.C.
The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), an initiative of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, draws on lessons from tobacco control and other public health advocacy campaigns in more than 50 countries to drive policy change campaigns around the globe to improve health. The Communications Director will join a dynamic and growing team that supports local civil society organizations in low-and middle-income countries working to change policy to improve public health across a variety of issues.
GHAI seeks a Communications Director to:
· Provide overall direction to our communications efforts across all GHAI programs. ensuring consistency and best practice.
· Lead communications strategies on specific GHAI programs as needed.
· Support GHAI Visibility and Marketing.
The Communications Director must have an overall understanding of and proven experience globally in conceptualizing and implementing communications strategies as a key element of policy advocacy campaigns, as well as experience in building this capacity among staff and partners in a global context. The Director will be a self-starter with strong project management skills and the ability to provide leadership across programs and within cross-functional teams. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Vice President of the Global Health Advocacy Incubator. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States.
Provide Overall Direction to GHAI Communications Efforts
GHAI communications staff on each of our programs (e.g., Road Safety, Obesity Prevention, Cardiovascular Health) provide support to in-country partners in conducting media advocacy efforts as part of strategic policy change campaigns. The Communications Director will provide leadership and advice to communications staff and efforts across GHAI programs, in coordination with Program Directors. This includes supporting staff in developing and implementing communications strategies — earned, paid, social, and owned media – with local partners, as well as ensuring that approaches across programs are complementary, enhancing the skills of communications staff and partners, and developing measures of success for media advocacy efforts.
Communications Support for GHAI Visibility and Marketing
In consultation with the Director for Strategic Outreach and Marketing, the Communications Director will work with communications staff to translate programmatic success stories into content (such as case studies, blogs, videos, presentations and social media messaging) across GHAI’s communications channels, including its website and social media. The Communications Director will help grow GHAI as a thought leader and practitioner in public health advocacy by developing white papers, writing and placing articles, and building relationships with media as needed. The Communications Director will engage program staff in promoting GHAI activities and accomplishments. In addition, the Communications Director will work with the Director of Strategic Outreach and Marketing to develop and coordinate external events.
Communications Support for Specific Programs
The Communications Director will direct strategic communications efforts on specific programs, such as Drowning Prevention and other programs as needed. Working with GHAI program staff, along with local and global partners, the Director will oversee the development and implementation of communications strategies in partner countries as part of comprehensive advocacy campaigns to achieve policy successes. This will include efforts to raise awareness of the problem, causes, and policy solutions, and to encourage adoption of evidence-based programs and policies.
Successful candidates will be experienced in advocacy for policy change and especially in the role of strategic communications in policy advocacy campaigns.
· At least ten years of relevant experience applying media relations, communications, and/or digital media expertise in public health, public policy, and government or nonprofit sectors.
· Significant experience designing and implementing integrated communications strategies to advance policy change, including elements of paid, owned and earned media, and across a range of platforms including traditional and digital media.
· Experience in providing communications support to policy change campaigns, preferably on public health issues, and in low- and middle-income countries.
· Proven ability to manage, lead and mentor, with the ability to earn the trust of a diverse team.
· Experience building advocacy communications capacity of staff and local partners.
· Excellent writing, editing and verbal communications skills.
· Commitment to advancing public health and a country-led approach to policy change.
· Significant experience working globally, in cross-cultural settings with dispersed teams.
Bachelor’s degree in public policy, communications, public health, or other relevant field required; Master’s degree preferred.
Additional language skills a plus; and
Willingness to travel internationally.
