July President’s Letter
This month, there is much to celebrate, and there is much to be grateful for.
We’re already halfway through the year, an opportunity for us to reflect on what we’ve accomplished together while looking ahead to what’s still to come. It has been an active and great first six months for our chapter, and every success has been made possible by the dedication, passion, and generosity of our members, board, and volunteers.
Today also happens to be my birthday, which has me reflecting with a heart full of gratitude. A good way to celebrate is by recognizing this amazing community of communication professionals that I have the privilege to work with.
This year has also given us moments that remind us of the power of communication to unite people. As our nation celebrates America’s 250th birthday, we have an opportunity to reflect on our shared history while looking toward the future. Although I can say I hardly recognize the National Mall, at the same time, millions around the world have come together through the excitement of the FIFA World Cup (bummer, the USA is out).
From a public relations perspective, it’s been fun to watch how storytelling, national identity, community engagement, and global connection have transcended borders (although I never thought ranch dressing would become world famous). Few events demonstrate the ability of communication to bring people together quite like the World Cup, and it’s a powerful reminder of why our profession matters.
It’s especially fitting that today is World PR Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the strategic communicators who build trust, strengthen relationships, and help organizations navigate an increasingly complex world. Public relations professionals often work behind the scenes, but the impact we make is visible every day in our communities, organizations, and society.
Earlier this week, I received a phone call from someone seeking advice about serving as a PRSA chapter president. They asked what makes a successful presidency. My answer, without hesitation, was that it’s all about the board members and incredible volunteers who engage and inspire members.
Our chapter thrives because of people who willingly give their time, talents, creativity, and leadership. Whether planning professional development programs, coordinating networking events, managing communications, mentoring emerging professionals, or simply raising their hand to help, our volunteers are the heartbeat of this organization.
As we continue through the second half of the year, I hope you’ll stay connected and take advantage of the outstanding opportunities ahead with the early career happy hour on July 21 and Beyond the Email Blast: How to turn your members into your most powerful advocates on July 28, in person.
As always, thank you for being part of the PRSA National Capital Chapter. Thank you for investing in your profession, supporting your colleagues, and contributing your talents to this remarkable community.
Here’s to a great second half of the year, continued collaboration, and finding even more reasons to celebrate together.
With gratitude (for all you do, and I’m off to Italy Sunday),
Trisha Hernandez
President, PRSA National Capital Chapter
