May President’s Letter
In recognition of AANHPI Heritage Month, I encourage you to engage with a few upcoming events that center storytelling, community, and leadership—core to effective public relations practice.
When: Saturday, May 16, at 11 AM – 7 PM
Where: 400 Pennsylvania Ave NW
API Pride Community Writing Workshop
A reflective writing session exploring identity and heritage.
When: Sunday, May 31 at 11 AM
Where: 899 North Capitol Street NE
These events are strong reminders of how storytelling drives connection and impact in our work.
Last month’s highlight was welcoming 30 of our members for a tour and conversation at the Associated Press office here in D.C. We had the opportunity to hear from veteran reporter Darlene Superville, who covers presidential politics and co-authored a biography on Jill Biden. She joined us shortly after covering an event at the White House, which made the experience feel even more timely.
What stood out to me most was her composure. Regardless of the question, she responded with a calm, thoughtful, and steady presence. In today’s media environment, that ability to remain even- keeled is an incredible skill and one of the qualities that clearly makes her such an exceptional reporter.
May brings the start of warmer weather and graduation season! Congratulations to all our members who are graduating and to our members that have a loved one graduating. We also have several upcoming events for you all to attend. We have had many members asking to have an event for people starting their own communication consulting, if that’s you, or if you are thinking of it in the future, you won’t want to miss out on the communication consulting roadmap virtual workshop on May 20, at 12:00 PM ET.
We also have a great opportunity to tour the Washington National’s Park, and hear from the Vice President of Communication, Valeri Krebs, and of course, watch a game on June 1. I hope to see many of you there for a fun evening.
Our committees continue to be hard at work to plan events for our community for professional development and connecting as a community.
I’m off to NYC today for PRSA FutureCon. I’ll let you know what I think the key takeaways were from it in next month’s newsletter.
Best,
Patricia (Trisha) Hernandez
