May President’s Letter
May is a powerful transition month—graduations, reflections, and fresh momentum. At PRSA NCC, we’re channeling that energy into listening, leading, and lifting each other up.
Congratulations to our PRSSA graduates and communications, marketing, and public affairs graduates across the DMV Metro Area! As you step into this next chapter, know that becoming a PRSA member can be more than a credential—it’s a community of professionals ready to support, guide, and champion you. Whether you’re navigating your first job, building your network, or looking for advice, lean on this community. We’re here to help you grow, lead, and thrive in your communications career. Welcome—we’re so glad you’re here! And take advantage of your eligibility for reduced PRSA membership rates.
Thanks to all who completed our Spring Membership Survey! Your voice matters, and we will use your feedback to design more impactful programming, better ways to connect, and increase your return on your NCC membership. Stay tuned for updates this summer. If you didn’t get a chance to participate in the member survey and have insights you’d like to share, email us at info@prsa-ncc.org.
What Else You Need to Know This Month:
- Mental Health Matters: May is Mental Health Awareness Month—and a reminder that protecting our wellness helps us lead better, pitch smarter, and show up stronger for ourselves and each other, especially during challenging times. United Way of the National Capital Area offers a helpful round-up of locally-based mental health and wellness resources if you, a loved one or a colleague are in need.
- Boost Your Brand, Sponsor NCC: We deeply thank our current sponsors (featured in every NCC email) for their generosity and partnership. We welcome new sponsors who want to grow alongside us — the nation’s largest PRSA chapter. NCC sponsors not only help fuel our programming—they also gain meaningful exposure to a diverse network of influential communicators. In addition to financial support, sponsors can contribute through in-kind offerings such as event spaces, products, or services that enhance our member experience. Interested in learning more? Contact us at info@prsa-ncc.org.
- Learn How to Network (and More!): Our upcoming events are designed with you in mind. Whether you’re looking to recharge your professional toolkit or meet your next collaborator, don’t miss what’s coming up, including How to Network Effectively In-Person or Online on Thursday, May 22, 12–1 PM EDT. - Don’t Miss ICON 2025 in D.C.: PRSA’s biggest event of the year—ICON 2025—is coming to Washington, D.C., October 28–30 at the Washington Hilton. This can’t-miss conference is designed to sharpen your skills, expand your network, and energize your work. One highlight: Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., President and CEO of SHRM, will deliver a keynote on workplace culture, leadership, and DEI. With dozens of breakout sessions, workshops, and networking events, you’ll leave with insights you can use immediately. Whether you’re just starting out or leveling up, ICON is built for your growth. - Job Hunt and Transition Support: We’re still working hard to find ways to support our NCC community members seeking new job opportunities or in job transition. Stay tuned in June for an updated version of our Job Search and Transition Resources blog post. Moving from the public sector to the private sector? Watch our recent webinar with the National Association of Government Communicators (NAGC) on Navigating Job Changes in Times of Uncertainty and hear actionable tips and inspiration from career placement experts and peers who have made this transition. Have an idea? Share with us at info@prsa-ncc.org.
- Honesty in Communications: In a time when trust is everything, check out the latest NCC blog post written by member Marjorie Weisskohl, APR which explores why honesty isn’t just a virtue—it’s a strategic imperative. From client relationships to crisis response, learn how transparency, consistency, and ethical decision-making shape stronger communication outcomes. Want to write a post for the NCC blog? Pitch your idea to info@prsa-ncc.org.
- Crystal’s Non-PRSA Resource(s) of the Month: In support of public broadcasting, this month’s resource is one of the favorite podcasts—NPR’s Throughline. As communicators, we understand the value and importance of context. This podcast explores and exposes the context behind the news headlines. Hosted by Peabody Award-winning journalists Rund Abdelfatah and Ramtin Arablouei, this series connects current events to their historical roots, helping us understand how we got here—and why it matters now. Throughline offers rich examples of how we can sharpen our messaging, deepen our storytelling, and broaden our perspectives in our communications work. It’s worth a listen.
In challenging times, leadership isn’t optional—it’s essential. And it’s not defined by a title, but by consistent action. Whether you’re guiding a team, managing a campaign, or simply navigating change yourself, how you show up matters. Leading with empathy, curiosity, and courage isn’t just how we grow as professionals—it’s how we move our field forward. Let’s keep lifting each other up.
If we’re not yet connected on LinkedIn, I’d love to hear from you—send me a request and let’s stay in community.
Be well, keep in touch, and thank you for being an essential part of PRSA NCC. Onward!
